7zX works pretty well. It took a 56.8 mb photoshop file down to 24 mb for me, with no mac data, and 24.1 with. That kind of compression task is where it shines. Built in Mac zip from the finder reduced the same file to 32.7 mb. Stuffit reduced it to 23.4, with the drawback of being, well, Stuffit and the annoyances that go with it. A freeware utility that comes so close to doing what a commercial license utility does is very impressive.
FWIW, 7zX is a little slower than those others and the process took all available CPU resources on my box, an iMac G5. Stuffit took 44%.
