The 7z file format is publicly available under the GNU LGPL licence. This statement alone should provide a good protection against the risks of becoming unsupported by its author.

It provides many advantages over traditional formats, including support for AES-256 encryption, files up to 16 exabytes (16,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes), Unicode file names, and more, so I would eventually expect it to become as popular as tar, zip, and their friends.

Regarding your second question, -- long story short --, I will do anything in my capabilities in order to keep 7zX the best Mac OS X utility for handling the 7z format. I'm not going to tell you more because if I did I would be forced to knock on wood.

One last note: donors will receive a custom license so that they won't have to play with the green reminder anymore. ;)

Hi there,

I really like this application. It looks very nice and it compresses better than most other compressionformats.

The only reason for me to hasitate and start using it for all my stuff is: how long will this compressionformat stay? There are already so many others (I'm not an expert on this area, so I do not know how long it's already there...)

And the reason I have not donated yet is because you ran into a problem a while ago (I thought it had something to do with the program in which you created 7zX) and could not say how long it would take to overcome that problem... (I've paid for programs in the past and saw the support for those programs and my money go away several times, that's why I want to be sure, before... :-) )

Can you say anything about how long you think this format will last and how long you will continue to work on your great app, even when you do not get the amount of donations you would like to get? Thanks and please continue your work on 7zX, I like it very much!

I guess negative comments are part of the game just like the positive ones. I don't mind them as long as they are constructive. Unfortunately, some of the notes I recently read seemed just unproductive bashing to me.

I read your comments at macupdate. If people are not happy with what you provide, I say code it yourself. What, you mean they can't code it... keep it up and more power to you
