New! :: 7zX 1.4.2 release 2

Posted on Thursday 13 July 2006

This release fixes a critical bug introduced with version 1.4.1, which would prevent archive encryption and SEA creation from working correctly. It is recommended that you immediately update 7zX.

Seems to work OK for creating and extracting un-encrypted archives.

I can find no evidence of the alluded to encryption features. Pressing “P” after dragging a file onto the app does nothing. Trashing the app, prefs, workflows and reinstalling the whole works does not help.

Where are you from, Ronald, and what keyboard layout are you currently using?

I am in Canada and using the US English keyboard layout.

Also, I have noticed if I do press “P” after I drop a file on the app the Automator workflows either don’t work or work erratically until I reboot.

There shouldn’t be any problems with your current keyboard layout. I suggest that while you try to open the 7zX application dragging a file or folder onto the app, you keep down the “P” key until the apposite dialog window comes up.

That should do the trick. Feel free to post again if this doesn’t resolve your problem.

I still can’t make it work. Pressing T to test an archive doesn’t work either - the app just opens the archive. It seems like it should be a simple task but maybe I am doing something wrong.

Or it could be an issue specific to my system. I have several non-Apple hardware components installed and I have disabled several startup items and done some other optimisations.

I’m having problems getting the Automator workflows to show up in the context menu.

I created the folders for the path:
    ~/Library/Workflows/Applications/Finder

I copied the workflow files into that folder. I restarted Finder and still don’t see them.

Here is an exerpt of the ls -al for that folder:
    drwxr-xr-x 3 admin admin 102 May 30 08:31 Create Archive with 7zX.workflow
    drwxr-xr-x 3 admin admin 102 Apr 22 12:07 Make Archive (.7z).workflow
    drwxr-xr-x 3 admin admin 102 Apr 22 12:07 Make Archive (.s7z).workflow
    drwxr-xr-x 3 admin admin 102 May 3 08:48 Make Archive (SEA .7z).workflow
    drwxr-xr-x 3 admin admin 102 May 3 08:48 Make Archive (SEA .s7z).workflow

    Any ideas?

Ronald Price: The archive testing function has been removed after release 1.4. The only thing I can suggest so far is that you make sure that you updated 7zX to 1.4.2r2. Versions 1.4.1 and 1.4.2 contained a bug which would prevent a few functions to work correctly, including the encryption suite.

Dave Metzener: While you appear to have copied the files into the right folder, I have noticed that the workflows appear to have the wrong owner. In particular, try assigning them to the “staff” group.

I have 1.4.2r2 installed. I’m guessing the problem is caused by something I’ve done with my system configuration. I’ll reset stuff to factory defaults and see if that helps.

Sorry, I see what the problem is now. Apparently the “~” refers to the “home” directory not the hard drive. I copied the files to {users home folder}/Library/Workflows/Application/Finder and they are there.

I’m a relative newbie to OS X and a little less of a newbie to Unix/Linux, but I guess I still have some stuff to learn. :)

    Thanks for your time!

Excellent work to both of you. :)

Ronald, you might want to try creating a new user account, and running 7zX under it. If that works, then I guess you removed some essential component from your original Mac OS X installation.

    Hi,

It seems not possible to use the encryption with a password. Encrypting works, but when I try to decrypt it, I get this:

Enter password (will not be echoed) :
    Extracting [Content] Data Error

    Sub items Errors: 1

And 7zX stays open and keeps processing… nothing… I’m using the latest update of Mac OS X (10.4.7) on an iMac G4 and the latest update of 7zX.

Another question, what moment exactly do I have to press the ‘p’ to make something encrypted with a password? I’m getting irritated hearing the sound effect of pushing the p longer to be sure the window to type a password will come…

    Thank you,

    JeePee

You aren’t doing it with the right timing. Try waiting until you see the 7zX window and then keeping down the “P” key until the password dialog appears.

Thanks for answering, but the problem stays the same. I wait for the 7zX window and then I keep down the P key until the password dialog appears, but the sound (the same sound when I push a button on a wrong moment) keeps repeating as long as I push the P-key…

Can you change that? Now I have to mute my loudspeakers…

It doesn’t happen here. Make sure 7zX is the frontmost application when you hit that key. ;)

Well, even when I quit all programs (just to be sure there can be no program interupting ;-) ) that annoying sound comes. Can it be that you do not get the “Thanks for using, etc. dialog and that that’s the reason I get the noise?

Maybe it’s a bug in Mac OS X, because I can remember getting that noise in another occasion with another program and that it was something in the OS.

I still find it hard to find the right moment, so I have to keep the P-key down a while and turn off “the music”. ;-)

By the way, can you reproduce my other problem mentioned somewhere else above?

“It seems not possible to use the encryption with a password. Encrypting works, but when I try to decrypt it, I get this:
Enter password (will not be echoed) :
    Extracting [Content] Data Error
    Sub items Errors: 1

I, too, have had some problems with 7zX giving me the same error message. I have an alias loaded in my dock. Whenever I want to compress, encrypt a file I, first grab the file icon, then as I drag the icon to the dock I depress the “p” key. I keep the key depressed until the password window comes up. Once this is done, 7zX does its job beautifully. The only problem I’m encountering is that sometimes when I try to decompress the file 7zX gives me the very same message Mr. JeePee gets. It’s facinating to watch the colored wheel revolve, isn’t it!
