smartctl controls and monitors storage devices using the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology System (SMART) built into most modern ATA and SCSI hard disks. In many cases, this utility will provide advanced warning of disk degradation and failure.

I downloaded smartctl, opened the dmg file and put the app into my app folder. I open it but nothing happens. Is it supposed to be that invisible?
    I use OS 10.4.8 on a G4 flat panel Mac(gooseneck)

You should have an extra item in your menubar. It looks like a gear. Look in the right corner of your screen. :)

Great utility - I used to run the command-line version on my PPC PowerBook - do you know if it’s possible to get this working on an Intel MacBook Pro?
For more info on the PPC version (someone made an installer that set it up to email you if there were SMART errors) check on http://macosxhints.com

There appear to be some compatibilty problems with the newer hard disk controllers (SATA). We are looking into the matter; a new version of smartctl will be released when everything is fixed. ;)

Nice one - make sure it’s put up on Macupdate/versiontracker when it’s all done. Great Work!
