smartctl controls and monitors storage systems using the S.M.A.R.T system built into most modern ATA and SCSI hard disks. In many cases, this utility can provide advanced warning of disk degradation and failure.

You can launch the software as a regular application: once you opened it, you will see a new icon in your menu bar. If you click on that icon, smartctl will perform a test on your hard disk, and display the results.

S.M.A.R.T monitoring is also provided by tools like Apple's Disk Utility, however, smartctl will give you many other informations on the status of your hard disk, such as the count of full hard disk power on/off cycles, the current hard disk drive temperature, the count of hours in power-on state, and more!
