Donations & co.

Posted on Saturday 8 July 2006

I would like to spend these few lines with a small discussion regarding donations. In particular, it looks like advertisements aren’t going to cover our expenses anytime soon, and I have to announce that we haven’t received a single penny via PayPal since February.

Although we all enjoy free software, you should recognize that producing quality stuff has its costs. For instance, I had to ask a third party artist to make decent icons for 7zX, and we still owe him some money (about 35 EUR).

As of this post, I have finished working on another interesting utility (it is a lightweight but advanced tool for monitoring disk status), but I won’t be able to upload it until I collect about 50 EUR, which will be used to pay a license for some of the instruments involved in its creation.

That’s it. Feel free to make comments. :)

New! :: 7zX 1.4.1

Posted on Saturday 8 July 2006

After a longer break, caused by the approaching of finals, I have managed to obtain a good build of 7zX. Version 1.4.1 includes many optimizations, which produce a faster and smaller (just 1.14 MB) software.

Take care, and enjoy your link:

AT&T doesn’t like me.

Posted on Tuesday 20 June 2006

It looks like AT&T is rejecting all the eMails from the cluster that contains our server. A friend of mine is going to get this problem fixed, but I do not know how much time this will take.

In answer to AT&T customer Ed Kimball’s question:

In order to open (or to create) a password protected archive, you have open the 7-Zip archive you want to decompress/drop the files you want to compress over 7zX’s icon, and then keep pressed the “P” key until the password dialog comes up.

Hope this helps,
Taskman

Respice, adspice, prospice

Posted on Tuesday 18 April 2006

After a chat with the developer of the tool used to compile 7zX, it has become clear that there is not much we can do to release a secure version of my software. Version 1.3.4 might be made available to the public soon, but will probably be only a repackaged version of 1.3.3. There will be no further release of 7zX for a while.

At the same time, I would like to announce that Sixty Five has been working for some time on a better, rewritten version of 7zX. I find the advancements made on this software incredible to behold.

Release 2.0 is nowhere near to be finished, but some features are present already, and more will be coming soon.

What’s going on here?

Posted on Sunday 16 April 2006

On April 11, 2006, a new version of 7zX had been released to the public. In the evening, however, an user sent us an important report, concerning the security of my product.

In order to make sure nobody would get hurt, I decided to take off any versions of 7zX I could find on the ‘net, including obviously the ones you could download from our website.

The problem is caused by a bug in the tool used to compile 7zX. I will have a chat with the author of that software sometime today, and I will be soon hopefully able to release an updated version 1.3.4.

That’s it for now, stay tuned.

Includes a preferences panel: you can now set the compression method once and be happy with it. Also, the software update bubble won’t pause operations anymore.

New! :: 7zX 1.3.2

Posted on Monday 3 April 2006

Version 1.3.2 is basically a highly optimized release of 7zX. The compression/decompression core has been updated to version 4.37 thanks to Kai Rune Mathisen, and is now smaller in size. This means that 7zX itself and any Self Extracting Archives created with it will be smaller too!
